ASTM, BS, DIN, EN: What Steel Standards Mean When You Order

Steel drawings and specifications in Qatar often quote a standard such as ASTM A36 or EN 10219. These codes tell everyone exactly what material is required. Understanding them helps you order the right steel the first time.

ASTM, BS, DIN, EN: What Steel Standards Mean When You Order

The main families of standards

  • ASTM is published by ASTM International in the United States. Common examples are ASTM A36 for structural steel shapes and plates, and ASTM A500 for cold-formed structural hollow sections.
  • EN standards are European Standards. Examples are EN 10025 for hot-rolled structural steel (grades such as S275 and S355) and EN 10219 for cold-formed welded hollow sections.
  • BS standards are British Standards. Many older BS steel standards have been replaced by European equivalents with the prefix BS EN, so you will often see codes such as BS EN 10025.
  • DIN standards come from Germany. Many have also been replaced by EN standards, but DIN references still appear on older drawings and some products.

Why the standard matters

A standard fixes the steel's strength, chemical composition, dimensions and tolerances. Two beams that look identical can perform differently if they are made to different standards or grades. Consultants specify a standard so the structure behaves as designed.

How to order correctly

  • Quote the standard and grade from your drawing, for example "EN 10219 S355" or "ASTM A500 Grade B".
  • Give the section size, thickness and length.
  • If your project needs documents, ask for the mill test certificate when you place your order.
  • If a drawing quotes an older BS or DIN standard, ask us about the equivalent material in stock.
